The twelve zodiac signs can be split into four elements (fire, water, air and earth) and three modes (cardinal, fixed and mutable). How much of a particular mode you have in your chart or what mode your sun sign is can tell you how you deal with conflict and life itself. Knowing your modes can help you learn a bit more about your personality. What are the four mutable signs and what does it mean to be a mutable sign?

What are the 4 mutable signs in astrology?

The four mutable signs are Sagittarius, Virgo, Gemini and Pisces.

The fixed signs are Leo, Taurus, Aquarius and Scorpio, and the cardinal signs are Aries, Capricorn, Libra and Cancer.

You can tell a lot from what mode your star sign is, but even more from the predominant mode from the rest of your chart (your Moon sign, Rising sign, Venus sign, Mars sign and so on).

Mutable star signs meaning

The Sun seasons of the mutable signs – Sagittarius, Virgo, Gemini and Pisces – coincide with the end of the seasons we know and love (Summer, Autumn, Winter and Spring).

For example, the Sagittarius season is November 22 to December 21, marking around the end of winter.

According to astrologer Sue Tompkins, that’s why these people are good at coping with uncertainty and shifting goalposts.

In her book, The Contemporary Astrologer’s Handbook she writes: “They are able to live in a state of flux and transition, always ready to respond to whatever is required of them.”

The mutable signs love change and they’re really adaptable and flexible.

In fact, they don’t like to stay in one place or position for too long, whether that’s their home, job, or even relationships sometimes.

These signs are able to adjust to any situation while curiously searching for something new or exciting.

They’re not necessarily goal-oriented because they’re more concerned with the journey than the destination.

Mutable signs are concerned with ideas or beliefs and they love reading, talking or philosophising about life.

They’re restless, desperate to learn more and see more every day.

These signs hate confrontation and tend to avoid it by changing direction and ignoring it.

Mutable people don’t necessarily set themselves clear goals because they are too easily side-tracked.

Some would say these people are prone to anxiety, inconsistency or they’re simply too scattered.

If you have too much mutability in your chart, you run the risk of being irresponsible or even a pushover.
