Millions of Brits ‘only wash their bed sheets once a year’, says study

How often certain items need to be washed is a controversial topic.

Obvious items such as underwear and socks need to be thrown in the laundry basket after every wash but things like jeans can apparently stretch up to 10 wears.

But let's be honest we don’t always listen to the experts – did you know you’re supposed to wash your bra after every two wears?

I bet most of us are stretching it a lot longer than that.

But a statistic which may turn your stomach, claims that one in three Brits only washes their bed sheets once a year.

That means a whole 12 months of sweat, dirt and grime. Yuck!

Naturally, experts warn against the habit which they say can lead to bacteria build-ups, itchy skin, and mites.

The gross findings by Hammonds Furniture don’t stop there. They also found out that 36% of Brits only wash blankets once a year, and 18% admitted to only washing jeans annually.

Winter garments like scarves, gloves and hats were also rarely washed despite how many germs quickly get trapped in them.

Really, they should be washed after every five to ten wears.

  • People are only just realising what others do to 'freshen up' before sex

According to METRO, Dr Aragona Giuseppe, GP and Medical Advisor at Prescription Doctor claims that changing your bed sheets once a week is best for optimum cleanliness.

They said: “Washing your clothing items and bedsheets regularly is important for overall cleanliness and ensuring your body remains clean and healthy.

“If you do not wash clothing items often you could be at risk of infection or just feeling and smelling unclean.

“Bed sheets and pillowcases should be washed as if they are dirty this could promote acne, spots and other skin issues due to the dirty bacteria on the sheets transferring to your skin.”
