Meghan Markle’s sold out £25 H&M maternity dress is on eBay for £150

The Meghan effect strikes again! £25 H&M maternity dress the Duchess wore to an animal shelter is now on sale on eBay for £150 – after selling out in 24 hours

  • Meghan wore a £25 dress from H&M’s maternity range to visit an animal shelter
  • The dress quickly sold out online but appeared on eBay less than 24 hours later
  • Those hoping to emulated the Duchess’ style will need to fork out up to £150
  • However, a used version of the dress in a size small is on the site for as little as £7

The H&M maternity dress Meghan wore to the Mayhew Animal Home in London earlier this week was a bargain at £25, but if you want to get your hands on one you’ll have to pay six times the original price.

The pregnant Duchess of Sussex stepped out in an all-cream ensemble, including H&M’s ‘MAMA Fine-knit dress’ in a light marl on Wednesday – costing a fraction of the price of the usual garments worn by the royals.

And since the high street dress sold out overnight, the dress has been listed on eBay for £150 plus postage, with a canny seller eager to cash in on the Meghan effect.

Elsewhere on the auction site, the dress is being sold in a range of size for £69, still almost triple the original cost.

Brands have seen their sales skyrocket after the American former actress has worn their items in the past.

Dubbed ‘The Meghan Markle effect’ items the Duchess wears often sell out within hours of her being photographed.

According to David Haigh, CEO of the British consultancy that specialises in brand valuation, Brand Finance, Meghan Markle could contribute £150 million to the British fashion industry in the form of unofficial brand endorsements.

After Meghan wore a pair of Outland denim jeans during her tour of Australia, the brand saw a global online traffic increased of more than 3,000 per cent.

They also gained 8,000 new Instagram followers in 24 hours, while Meghan’s ‘Harriet’ style of jeans sold out within that same time period.

‘You cannot put a price on the brand recognition nor the credibility that the Duchess is able to bestow on a small, socially oriented enterprise such as ours,’ founders James and Erica Bartle told Daily Mail Australia at the time.

It’s not the first time Meghan’s outfit has sparked a shopping frenzy; she caused a stylish beige coat to temporarily sell out in March, with the newly-married Duchess boosting sales of shoes, handbags and dresses since her betrothal to Harry was first announced.

And proving that she is well on her way to becoming the nation’s new style queen, a £425 crossbody bag she wore in Edinburgh earlier this year also sold out in record time.

Meghan opted for a bottle green Strathberry East/ West mini for her first official visit to Scotland in February – and within minutes it was listed as out of stock on the retailer’s website.

The former Suits actress similarly caused another Strathberry bag to fly off shelves last year.

She was spotted carrying the label’s £495 midi-tote in burgundy, navy and vanilla for her first official engagement as Harry’s bride-to-be back in December.

And the stylish bag was later revealed to have sold out in just 11 minutes according to the label, launched in 2013.
