Karren Brady has admitted that she carried ‘constant guilt’ over being a working mother when her children were little.

Baroness Brady, 49, who is vice-chairman of Premier League football club West Ham United, is mum to Sophia, 22, and Paolo, 20, with her footballer husband Paul Peschisolido, 47, and famously took just three days maternity leave when her first baby was born.

Speaking on Loose Women, the millionaire businesswoman admitted that she had missed out on ‘hundreds’ of things in her children’s upbringing, but maintains that she set them a good example by being independent.

She said: ‘I’ve done my very best and actually, that’s all you can do as a working mum.’

Karren, who is about to star in the 14th series of The Apprentice, said she believes every working mother can relate to the guilt she felt when her children were small.

She explained: ‘As a woman I think you carry around constant guilt of thinking you should be in one place, you know you should be in the other, and it’s a balancing act – you spend your whole life juggling.’

Karren was the managing director of Birmingham Football Club at the age of just 23, and became a mother to Sophia just a few years later.

Her daughter is now modelling for Topshop, and Karren believes her decision to work while raising her children hasn’t harmed them in any way.

She continued: ‘When your children see you as a working mother you set other examples; you show them the power of independence, the power of having an opinion, the power of having a career and they come through the other side. 

‘It’s not the person who drops them off at school in the morning or picks them up because you can’t. It’s about the whole person they become.’

When Loose Women panelist Jane Moore asked Karren if her children had every told her they wanted around more she responded: ‘Oh hundreds of times.’

Karren went on to say that she did some things wrong but she always did her best for her children.

She added: ‘I love my children, I love my work, I’ve tried to make it work. I haven’t always got it right but I’ve done my very best and actually that’s all you can do as a working mum.’

Baroness Brady, often referred to as ‘The First Lady of Football’, married Paul Peschisolido – who played for Birmingham City from 1992 to 1994, when she was managing director of the club in 1996.

Karren famously only took six weeks maternity leave after giving birth to her youngest child yet later said she wouldn’t recommend any new mothers doing the same.

Speaking on the Jonathan Ross show in 2014 she admitted: ‘Well, I didn’t take much maternity leave, which is a deep regret of mine.’
