A couple was branded “greedy” when they asked wedding guests to chip in towards their big day.

Instead of requesting gifts, they sent loved ones cards that encouraged them to donate $100 (around £56).

Instead of bluntly demanding cash, they came up with a cheeky poem to soften the blow.

The verse reads: "Our bank account is in debt, and we would like it to go back into credit. Please visit the ATM, we know you're a gem.

"Pull out your greens and let it be seen that your kindness is real when it's given its final seal.”

"So place your cash in our wishing well and make our dreams come true, that will be swell."

Some guests weren’t impressed by the card and vented their frustrations.

This led to a picture of the letter going viral on Facebook, where it garnered more than 750 comments.

A commenter remarked: "Eeek … I feel like the choice of words about the wishing well is a bit … tacky?"

Another said: "Oh wow. I’ve always wondered what the polite way to ask for money is. I know this ain’t it."

This isn't the only couple to cause a stir by making requests of their guests.

A soon-to-be-married couple baffled guests after asking pals to pay for their honeymoon – despite not inviting them to the wedding.

A miffed mate uploaded a snap of the invitation to the forum Reddit.

And, posters dubbed the request “tacky”.

The pictured invite said: “As much as we would love for you to attend sadly our venue can not accommodate everyone.

“We are sure to keep you in our hearts in this celebration of love."

It continued: “If you would like to congratulate the bride and groom, rather than a registry, they are accepting money to aid in a beautiful honeymoon.”

The poster captioned the snap: “Sorry you can’t come to the wedding, send us money anyway. ”

Redditors gave their opinions on the unusual request, with one asking: “When did weddings specifically become fundraisers?”

Another bride was slammed for asking guests to bring "potluck" dinners and envelopes of cash.

They hoped to save money on catering by getting loved ones to bring their own food along – but this move attracted criticism.

And another lass sparked fury after asking her bridesmaids to fork out for their own dresses.

When a disgruntled guest aired their concerns about this online, many agreed that it was “cheeky” of the bride.

One commenter remarked: “Very rude to say you need to buy your own dress and travel costs, she should be funding all that as part of the wedding.”

And another wrote: “Yes it is cheeky. I would never ask someone to be my bridesmaid and then ask them to pay for the dress.”
