As Great British Bake Off returns to screens – fake it till you bake it with these top tips and save

WHO doesn’t love a sweet treat – especially when it’s cheap?

The Great British Bake Off returns to our TV screens at 8pm on Channel 4 tonight.

And to celebrate, I’ve scoured stores for the best bargain kits, ingredients and puddings.

SIGNATURE BAKE: Check out BBC Food online for its shortbread recipe requiring only flour, sugar and butter — which costs a total of £2.58 at Lidl.

The recipe makes approximately 20 biscuits, so that’s around 12p each.

SIGNATURE CHEAT: Head to Tesco for Clubcard discounts across loads of cakes, pies and biccies, including six Mr Kipling apple and blackcurrent pies, usually £1.80, now 90p.

Or pick up a Madeira cake at Aldi, just 85p a loaf.

TECHNICAL CHALLENGE: This is my favourite part of the show, mainly because it’s where things can go very wrong.

In the past, contestants have tried brandy snaps, focaccia and bloomers.

Make your own bargain loaf using strong bread flour, dried yeast and a dash of olive oil. Pick up 1.5kg of Asda’s own-brand bread flour for just 60p and yeast sachets for 52p.

Plus, if you don’t get it right first time, you’ll have plenty left for another go.

TECHNICAL CHEAT: Can’t be faffed with making your own?

Get down to Morrisons for its two-pack of large choc eclairs, £1.50, or buy two for £2.50, saving 50p.

Savoury fans will love Sainsbury’s Taste The Difference rosemary and sea salt focaccia for £1.70.

But you can cheat for less money with its Wright’s garlic and rosemary focaccia bread mix, 500g, for just 99p.

SHOWSTOPPER: I think the key to a cheap showstopper is starting with a sponge sheet cake you can then cut into a fancy shape and ice with buttercream.

Get self-raising flour, butter, sugar, eggs and baking powder at Aldi for less than a fiver and then add a bottle of food colouring for 65p and unicorn sprinkles for 85p.

That’s just over £6, which is a great bargain

SHOWSTOPPER CHEAT: If you want to go pro, grab the ruby chocolate and raspberry cake from Asda that was £13, now £12.

It also has a Jazzie Rainbow cake for £12.
