Aldi launches free online wine course to help baffled shoppers pick the best booze – The Sun

ALDI has launched its own free online wine course – the “Aldiploma” – to help baffled shoppers navigate the wine aisle.

The course is ideal for the one in three wine drinkers who, according to research group Kantar, can’t stomach spending more than £5 on a bottle of wine.

The so-called “psychological £5 price barrier” means that many people opt for other alcoholic drinks instead of trying to pick a pricier wine.

In fact, similar research showed that two thirds of Brits claim to be baffled when buying wine.

The research by Sapio, which spoke to 2,000 wine drinkers about their shopping habits, also found that 91 per cent of us admit to bluffing about our wine knowledge.

But, now you can brush up your wine knowledge in your own time using the Aldiploma’s six online modules and video tutorials.

On the course, you’ll learn about wine jargon, how to read wine labels, food pairing tips, grape varieties, how wine is made and much more.

To start learning, simply visit the Aldiploma page on Aldi's website and select your module – you don’t have to create an account and you can save all the materials for your own use.

This isn't the only free wine course out there, both wine-pages.com and edX offer free online wine classes.

If you want to learn more about wine, make sure you check out the free options before you splash out on a paid wine course.

Serious vino lovers can sign up for the Wine and Spirit Education Trust's online courses – but prices start at £115 for a four week course.

The London Wine Academy also offer introductory wine courses from a variety of venues, charging £89 for a one day masterclass and £119 for a one week course.

Sam Caporn, Aldi’s wine expert featured on its course, said: “As one of only 382 Masters of Wine worldwide, it’s fair to say I know my Malbec from my Merlot – but that hasn’t always been the case!

“Rewind twenty years and I was just a wine lover with none of the technical knowledge I have now.

“Aldi is known for its affordable, great quality wines so this creates the perfect platform to help consumers try new things and gain the perfect introduction to the world of wine.”

You can browse Aldi’s award-winning wine range on its website.

You can use the course to learn what wines will go perfectly with this £6 Wagyu beef steak on sale in Aldi.

If wine isn't your style, Aldi are also selling some lovely festive tipples including a spiced apple and winter berry gin.

Lidl also have a bargain wine range, including some delicious rosé bottles that start at just £4.
