Mum’s despair as ‘satanic’ mother-in-law steals her shoes – but won’t admit it

Getting along with the in-laws can be a real challenge.

Even though you’re now family, it doesn’t always mean you see eye to eye on everything, which can put your partner in a very awkward situation.

One mum is at her wit’s end with her mother-in-law, as she’s convinced she’s swiped a pair of her shoes without asking.

She took to Mumsnet to vent her frustration, explaining: "Historically I’ve had a very difficult relationship with — Satan — my [mother-in-law].

"[My husband] pops his head in once a week on his way home from work but we otherwise have little to do with the witch.

"Last week I had to work away and she did massively help us out by popping in and checking on the puppy…. and since then I cannot find my very, very nice pair of wellies that my lovely [mother] treated me to.

"Anyway, to cut a long story short, [darling husband] went in to say hi yesterday eve and my wellies were there, neat by my backdoor. He immediately said ‘are they showjumpers wellies?’, she laughed and said ‘no, of course they’re not.’"

She claims her husband then explained that the mum has lost her identical wellies to the ones by the door that are made by the same brand, which the mother-in-law denies taking.

"She then laughed and commented how absentminded I am," the mum added.

She asked other mums on the parenting forum what they would do her in her situation – and people had some interesting ideas about how to steal them back.

One person wrote: "Tell you have a terrible fungal nail infection".

Another said: "Take the puppy over (with a full poo bag to hand) get your boots and empty bag in a pair of her shoes.. Make a hasty retreat to the car. With your boots of course!!"

Some were outraged by her behaviour, with one writing: "That’s such an odd thing to do. Does she have keys to your house? If so I’d change the locks and never ask her for a favour again."
