How uplifting it was to see celebrity mothers step up last week to share how they are teaching their children how to be anti-racists. Today we’re tickled by a story going the other way around. Jennifer Lopez shared on Instagram how her 12-year-old son Max approached her about supporting Black Lives Matter protests in the wake of George Floyd’s death.
“Max told me a few days ago: ‘You know mom, since you have a following like some of my YouTuber gamers and they ask us to support things and we do, you should do that for George Floyd,’” Lopez wrote on Instagram Sunday night.
We must pause for a moment to enjoy Max’s low-key burn, comparing his international superstar mom to “YouTuber gamers.”
Anyway, Lopez said she was already “planning a few things,” but the question inspired her to ask Max and his twin sister Emme to help her make signs for the march she and fiancé Alex Rodriguez attended on Sunday. This also spurred a good conversation in the family about racial justice.
“We talked about how if one person doesn’t have justice, then no one does,” Lopez wrote. “That this country was built on the belief of freedom and justice for all. We must take a stand for what we believe in and fight against the injustices in this world. So we continue to peacefully protest until there is change.”
This is the kind of racism talk we hope families everywhere had this week, if they hadn’t already.
In her Instagram Stories and the polished, edited video she posted, we can see the signs Emme and Max helped make: “Let’s Get Loud for Black Lives Matter,” “BLM #EnoughIsEnough,” “Calling all mamas: All mothers were summoned when he called out for his mama.”
In the video, we see Lopez, Rodriguez, an unidentified woman, and at least one security guard marching in Los Angeles.
“Los Angeles, we are proud to join you in peaceful protest tonight,” Rodriguez wrote on his Instagram. “We are proud to walk alongside you, and to share in spreading such an important message. Thank you for speaking up. Thank you for continuing to fight the good fight. Thank for you using your voices for good. America: It’s time to listen.”
