Grimes Files a Lawsuit Against Elon Musk & It Has Everything to Do With Their 3 Kids

Sophie Turner isn’t the only celebrity mom taking her ex to court over their kids — Grimes borrowed a feather out of the actress’ cap and has sued Elon Musk for parental rights to their three children.

According to Page Six, the lawsuit was filed by Grimes (née Claire Boucher) on September 29. The petition requests that the court system “establish a parental relationship” between herself and the kids she shares with Musk: X Æ A-Xii, 3, Exa Dark Sideræl, 1, and Techno Mechanicus, whose exact age is unknown. The lawsuit does not mention child custody or child support.

Grimes’ legal action follows her claims that Musk has been withholding their kids. Taking to Twitter on September 7, the musician responded to a post made by Walter Isaacson, who authored an upcoming biography about the Tesla co-founder. “Tell Shivon [Zilis] to unblock me and tell Elon to let me see my son or plz respond to my lawyer,” Grimes wrote in her since-deleted tweet.

Zilis welcomed twins with Musk in 2021 after the businessman and Grimes broke up. Referencing a photo of the toddlers in Isaacson’s tweet, the “Genesis” singer added, “I have never even been allowed to see a photo of these children until this moment, despite the situation utterly ripping my family apart.”

Grimes and Musk had dated on and off from 2018 to 2021, and they were confirmed to have broken up in September 2021. However, their daughter Exa was born via surrogate at the end of the year. The news of Musk’s twins with Zilis broke in July 2022, and they were confirmed to have been born in November 2021 — a month before Exa’s arrival. In September 2023, Musk also confirmed that he and Grimes welcomed a third child, though the date of their birth is unknown. The overlapping timeline presumably has been a reason for Grimes and Musk’s relationship gone sour.

Musk has 11 children, has been divorced three times, and is known to have been disowned for being transphobic by his trans daughter Vivian. He has a long history of being messy when it comes to family, and Grimes’ lawsuit is just the latest indication that he makes some pretty contentious choices as a father. We hope the court system will grant Grimes parental rights to her children — we can’t imagine the difficulties she’s undoubtedly been going through.
