Gender Reveal Flyby Ends in Deadly Plane Crash in Cancun

What started as a fun “gender” reveal party in Cancún, Mexico, ended in tragedy on Tuesday, as the plane hired to fly by with a sign announcing “It’s a girl” crashed into the sea, killing the pilot and co-pilot, according to the Daily Mail. The expectant couple and their guests were gathered on a party boat to watch the small propeller plane with the announcement, but after the Cessna 206 made a swooping turn over the boat with the sign, it suddenly nosedived into the lagoon.

Emergency services rushed to the crash site, but one of the pilots died during the rescue effort while the other died as paramedics provided first aid on land. The plane, which took off from Holbox, around 40 miles northwest of Cancún, had been rented for the party from an air taxi company called Xomex, according to local media reports.

The civil aviation agency is investigating the cause of the crash. Guests at the party were recording the plane’s flyby announcement and caught the horrifying crash on their videos.

After fires, cannons, and accidental bombs have killed people and destroyed forests, this latest crash is one more reason we’re begging people to stop with these over-the-top theatrics to announce a baby’s genitals.

While many people choose to do gender reveals because it’s one of those cute, trendy things you do to celebrate the impending arrival of your little one, more and more people are abandoning the tradition because gender is a social construct. The standard “blue or pink” parties don’t encompass other gender identities such as trans, genderqueer, non-binary, and more. Notably, blogger Jenna Karvunidis, the mom who popularized the gender-reveal trend in 2008, regrets what she started.

“Gender reveal parties are canceled,” she told Today in 2019. “I cringe when I see them now. The insane levels people are taking them just to celebrate one of the most mundane facts about their child is just bizarre.”

In July 2019, Karvunidis wrote a Facebook post about how she felt about gender-reveal parties. She is now a mom of three who has “a lot of mixed feelings about my random contribution to the culture. It just exploded into crazy after that. Literally — guns firing, forest fires, more emphasis on gender than has ever been necessary for a baby.”

“Who cares what gender the baby is?” she wrote in her Facebook post. “I did at the time because we didn’t live in 2019 and didn’t know what we know now: that assigning focus on gender at birth leaves out so much of their potential and talents that have nothing to do with what’s between their legs.”

And the amazing conclusion: “PLOT TWIST, the world’s first gender-reveal party baby is a girl who wears suits!”

It’s been almost two years since the gender-reveal party founder herself called out this outdated custom. Can we put an end to them now?
