“They got a paycheck every week,” the actress, 55, exclusively told Us Weekly on Tuesday, September 1, while promoting her Life Happens partnership. “This was their hard-earned money. And they realized how hard it was to get that check, that piece of paper.”
Now when Rowan, 17, and Grier, 14, “complain” about Shields or her husband, Chris Henchy, working, “they have a larger understanding of what it means to work and provide.”

The There Was a Little Girl author called this an “interesting development” in her time as a parent, saying she taught the teens how to handle their money. “At first, they just handed [the checks] to me and said, ‘Well, can you put this somewhere?’ And then it became, ‘OK, let’s show you how this works,’” the New York native explained. “There are baby steps.”
In addition to money management, the Golden Globe nominee has also been teaching her girls about life insurance since before they hit “double digits.” After Rowan and Grier experienced the loss of Shield’s mother, Teri Shields, that was “an opening for a conversation as to all of the details that happen.”
At the time, Shields was “surprised” by how much her children grasped. “Obviously you don’t want to be too heavy about it, but it’s a good launching-off place to talk about finances because little kids and even teenagers think that things just happen,” the model explained, encouraging other parents to do so during September — Life Insurance Awareness Month. “The idea that everything that we work for goes into those things that they think just happen.”
The Princeton University grad has been learning from Rowan and Grier as well while quarantining at home amid the coronavirus pandemic. They have been “inventive,” she told Us, doing TikTok videos. Shields joked, “There are ways that you can actually engage and spend time with your parents and it’s not torture.”

The Endless Love star shared one such video in May, calling her eldest daughter an “a–hole” for hitting her in the face with a purse for a viral video.
