Gardening tips: Expert on how to grow lavender at home
Extreme weather conditions are becoming more prominent in the UK and are now an issue that every gardener will face.
Choosing plants that are suitable for these conditions is important as otherwise, gardeners could end up with borders filled with dead, shrivelled-up plants during the height of summer.
Drought-tolerant plants prefer dry soil and little water and usually come from from the Mediterranean.
Planting hardy and drought-tolerant plants means Britons can enjoy a thriving, attractive garden, even during a hosepipe ban.
With this in mind, William Mitchell, the owner of Sutton Manor Nursery, has named some of the most hardy plants that are resistant to severe weather conditions.

He said: “Following the driest summer in nearly 30 years in 2022, experts have now warned that we are just one barren spell away from a drought.
“Given this, gardeners may now need to start filling their borders with drought-resistant plants.
“The likes of lavender, hardy geraniums, and bearded irises are perfect choices for surviving long periods of dry spells while keeping your garden aesthetically pleasing.”
Drought-tolerant plants like free-draining soil and can work well in gravel gardens. They’re also a lot easier to look after as they require less watering.

Lavender
Lavender is both attractive and easy to grow. The plant flowers in late spring and summer has silver-grey foliage and produces pretty purple flowers.
Many types of lavender are hardy but need to be kept away from cold, damp parts of the garden.
There is a range of lavender varieties which vary in colour, size, fragrance and hardiness.
Hardy geraniums
Hardy geraniums are the most popular perennials in Britain, according to The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS).
The plants are easy to grow yet tough and can flower for months on end, making them an idea plant for garden borders and containers.
Some of the best types to plant include Geranium Rozanne, Geranium renardii, Geranium pratense ‘Mrs Kendall Clark’ and Geranium ‘Orion’.
Bearded irises
The bearded iris is also known as the “border iris” and comes in a range of colours including purples, yellows, blues and apricots.
These plants like a sunny position, well-draining soil and occasional watering.
