Tests on 80 young, overweight adults found 8.5 hours helped curb appetites by up to 500 calories a day. Study author Dr Esra Tasali, of the University of Chicago Medicine, said: “We have shown sleep restriction leads to increased food intake.

“The question everyone was asking was, ‘Can we extend sleep and reverse some of these adverse outcomes?’.”

The findings were published in the JAMA Internal Medicine journal.
