Baking soda is most commonly used in the kitchen while making cakes. But, it may also have a number of health benefits you didn’t know about. Should you consider adding more baking soda to your diet?

Baking soda has been used for centuries as a natural deodorant and cleanser.

It’s more commonly known as bicarbonate of soda in the UK, and is generally known for its alkaline properties.

Baking soda is a chemical leavening agent, which means it helps batter to rise.

Regularly adding baking soda to your diet could help to improve your digestion, protect against fungal infections, and even avoid tiredness.

Improve digestion

Baking soda has been claimed to neutralise acid in the stomach and improve the pH balance in the body.

It could, therefore, lower your chances of developing acid reflux or heartburn, according to medical website Dr Axe.

The best way to consume baking soda for digestion is to add a few teaspoons to some water, and then slowly drink it.

But avoid drinking too much baking soda over a short period of time, as it can have the reverse effect if consumed in large quantities.

Reduces tiredness

Baking soda has been claimed to improve athletic performance.

Adding it to your diet before strenuous activity could help you to sustain exercise for up to an extra seven minutes, scientists have revealed.

The practice is known as bicarbonate loading, and may also benefit your muscles after exercise.

It could protect against the negative side effects of lactic acid in the muscles.

Prevent itchy skin

Baking soda may help to reduce some of the symptoms linked to rashes or sunburn.

Dr Axe said: “Baking soda can help to reduce discomfort from sunburn, allergic rashes, and skin affected by poison ivy or poison oak.

“Mix a teaspoon with some water to create a baking soda paste and apply it to the areas of concern. Leave it on for several minutes and then rinse.

“You can do this a few times per day as needed.”

Bad breath

Using your baking soda in a mouthwash could improve your oral health, as it’s a natural antibacterial.

A build-up of bacteria is a common cause of bad breath, which is why mixing baking soda into your morning routine could leave you with fresh breath for the rest of the day.

Avoid fungal infections

Baking soda is effective against a number of different fungal groups, including yeast and moulds.

These fungi can develop into an infection on the skin or in your nails, if they’re left untreated.
