Planning the food menu is one of the most exciting and important tasks ahead of any wedding. For the Cambridges’ wedding in 2011, staff prepared a three-course meal and not one, but three, desserts for the couple’s 300 special guests.

Prince William and Kate Middleton got married 10 years ago to this day, in 2011.

The wedding ceremony took place at Westminster Abbey, but the newlyweds and 300 guests were then served a three-course meal at the reception a Buckingham Palace ballroom.

Interestingly, the Duke and Duchess’s wedding menu was hidden from the public for almost four years, until details of the feast were revealed in February 2015.

Kate wore a second dress for the reception – changing from her iconic ceremony gown to a much simpler satin ivory dress.

Both dresses were designed by Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen, and the Duchess paired the second dress with a cropped fluffy cardigan and a wide diamond-encrusted belt.

But what did the guests eat at the reception?

The dinner’s menu was printed on a white card with a green ivy border and images of birds.

At the top of the card, above the names “William” and “Catherine” was the Prince of Wales three feathers’ insignia, which features the motto “Ich Dien”, meaning “I serve”.

The couple’s names, as well as the wedding date and the details of the food, were all written in an elegant italic font.

The menu revealed what the guests had as a starter, main meal, and dessert, as well as which wines were served with which meal.

To begin with, the guests were served Marinated South Uist salmon, Lyme Bay crab, wild Hebridean langoustines, and a fresh herb salad, accompanied with a 2009 Meursault, Domaine Guyot-Javillier wine.

The dinner’s main meal was a Saddle of North Highland Mey Select organig lamb with Highgrove spring vegetables, English asparagus, Jersey Royal potatoes, and Windsor sauce.

This traditionally British meal was served with bottles of L’Hospitalet de Gazin, Pomerol wine, from 2004.

As for dessert, the Royal couple and their guests were offered a trio of Berkshire honey ice cream, sherry trifle, and chocolate parfait.

These sweet treats came accompanied with Laurent Perrier Rosé, while coffee and fresh mint tea were also served.

The dinner was extravagant but inherently British, with produce sourced locally.

Some of the vegetables came from Prince Charles’ private residence’s garden, while the honey was picked from the Duchess of Cambridge’s home county, Berkshire.

One of the menu cards from the wedding reception was auctioned in Los Angeles in 2015, giving the Royal Family’s secret wedding reception dinner away.

The menu featured a tiny coffee stain, but still sold for a whopping £800.

The Cambridges’ wedding, as well as their reception and dinner, was very different to the Sussexes.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle got married in 2018 at St George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle, before treating their 600 guests to a wedding breakfast with no arranged seating plan.

Instead of having a sit-down three-course meal, Harry and Meghan’s guests ate from food bowls while mingling around a room in Frogmore Hall.

Meghan wore a sky blue Givenchy gown for the occasion.
