The classic chocolate digestive is officially the nation's favourite biscuit

There are few things that get Brits as riled up as a debate on the topic of food – whether it’s what goes first on a scone (and how you pronounce scone, for that matter) or the correct term for a chip butty.

But what most of us can agree on is that biscuits are good.

What we might argue about, though, is which biscuit is the best.

According to a recent survey, it’s the humble chocolate digestive that comes out on top.

Researchers asked 2,000 Britons to vote for their favourite biscuit, and 69% chose chocolate digestives as their winner.

Classic shortbread came in at second place, followed by chocolate fingers, then jaffa cakes.

The nation’s favourite biscuits

Other important biscuit stats from the survey include that Brits eat an average of 11 biscuits a week, and that the older generation are more likely to enjoy a ginger nut, while younger people like Oreos.

When it comes to the biggest biscuit lovers in the UK, people who live in Norwich eat 650 biscuits a year, more than any other UK City.

Our favourite way to have a biscuit is with a cup of tea, while 22% of people like to pair theirs with a coffee.

Dunking is still very much a thing, with 23% of 16 to 29-year-olds saying they dunk versus just 11% of over-60s.

Ellie Glason Director at Perspectus Global, commented: ‘We were surprised to see just how much the nation still loves a biscuit – and especially the people of Norwich who get through a staggering 650 a year.

‘It’s also interesting to see from the research that American imports such as the Oreo and Maryland cookie have found their way into the top 20, even beating the Garibaldi and fig roll.

‘Yet the British public clearly still hold the chocolate digestive close to their hearts, with the biscuit emerging as the clear winner of the poll.’
