Buttercream looks extremely decadent but it’s not as difficult to make as it looks. With or without food colouring, the basic ingredients never change and all you need is some butter or margarine, icing sugar, milk and flavoured essence. Express.co.uk reveals how to make buttercream in three easy steps, according to BBC Good Food.

  • 100g (4oz) soft butter or margarine
  • 225g (8oz) icing sugar
  • 1 tablespoon milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon (flavour desired) essence

  • 1 tablespoon milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon (flavour desired) essence

Method

Step one

Put the butter or margarine into a large bowl and beat well until soft and fluffy.

Step two

Sift the icing sugar into the bowl and stir it in.

Step three

Add the milk and the essence and beat well until you get a pale and fluffy mixture. If desired add two to three drops of food colouring.
