No one can forget Meghan Markle’s bold colour choice for the 2020 Commonwealth Day Service, but she was not the first royal to step out wearing bright green or a cape design. In fact, Princess Charlene of Monaco has worn two cape-style dresses, once in 2017 and another in 2019. And according to fashion experts, one of the ladies looked more “regal” whilst the other made her outfit “seem effortless”.

In 2017, Princess Charlene attended the IAAF Diamond League Meeting Herculis in Monaco.

For the occasion, she wore a Roland Mouret Henleigh one-shoulder crepe-jersey gown in bright green.

The dress had several interesting design elements; it was floor length with a large slit up the Princess’ left side.

It featured a thick waistband which the top half of the dress hung slightly over.

The gown was also one-shoulder and had a large batwing long sleeve which created drama.

Across the shoulders and neck was an intricate multicoloured beaded collar that featured a tall neckline.

For jewellery, the royal wore Dior earrings and a large diamond ring.

A couple of years later, for the 71st Monaco Red Cross Ball Gala in Monaco, Princess Charlene turned heads when she stepped out in a vivid green Marchesa Notte dress.

It too was floor-length, and there were three keyholes across the shoulders and bust which formed a cape and created volume as she walked.

Princess Charlene wore her hair up with loose curly tendrils framing her face.

As for jewels, Charlene sported her golden Repossi drop earrings with delicate pearls.

She also carried a small green and gold jewelled clutch bag.

Royal fans commented on Princess Charlene wearing vivid green and said: “What a pleasant surprise!! Colour makes a huge difference. First time seeing her in a green gown, and it’s a beautiful design!

“Wow. Charlene looks stunning. One of her best evening gowns and green is her colour I think. Everything is perfect about her look,” another added.

A third wrote: “Oh, wow! Gorgeous dress. It’s elegant regal and just fantastic. Hair is beautiful and she looks stunning. What a transformation.”

Someone else was taken aback: “That is a stunning ball gown and a nice colour for Charlene. Love her hair, the texture of her hair seems to be fine and maybe just a bit thin; however she works to find a style that suits her hair and not what everyone else does. I so admire her style. She seems to have a certain mystic about her and holds a bit back — good for her — what an amazing lady.”

As for Meghan, she wore vivid green for the 2020 Commonwealth Day Service.

Her dress was a bespoke cape-effect green dress by British designer Emilia Wickstead.

The custom piece appeared to combine elements of the designer’s ‘Trista’ midi dress and the ‘Harley’ cape-effect jumpsuit.

She accessorised with a hat by William Chambers, nude stiletto pumps by Aquazzura and a chic mini bag by Gabriela Hearst.

Vogue commented on Meghan’s outfit and said: “Green is a notoriously difficult colour to wear, but Markle made it seem effortless.”

Meghan’s green cape certainly got heads turning, especially since it went against the colour scheme for the occasion.

Female royals are meant to choose outfits in shades of blue, white or red for Commonwealth Day.
