A huge degree of secrecy shrouds the making of royal wedding dresses, with designers taking great care to guard their custom creations. In recent years, royal brides have tended to wear grand dresses for their wedding ceremonies and lower-key gowns for their receptions. Express.co.uk takes a look back at three of the most iconic second royal wedding dresses of the last few years.
Kate, Princess of Wales
Kate Middleton was the envy of millions when she emerged at Westminster Abbey on her wedding day in 2011 wearing a lacy gown by Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen.
The dress featured a fitted bodice overlaid with delicate lace, giving way to a flared skirt that cinched at the waist.
Kate’s wedding dress was praised for its timeless elegance, and it drew comparisons to the royal wedding dress worn by Grace Kelly, the Princess of Monaco, in 1956.
But for her wedding reception at Buckingham Palace, Kate changed into a simpler dress with a shorter train so she could dance the night away.
The satin dress featured a sweetheart neckline and an A-line skirt, tied in at the waist by a bejewelled belt.
The newly-created Duchess accessorised the outfit with a furry short cardigan and she wore her hair in loose curls.
Like her wedding dress, Kate’s second gown on the day was designed by Sarah Burton.

Meghan, Duchess of Sussex
Meghan opted for two classic gowns for her wedding day, the first being a custom design by Clare Waight Keller for Givenchy.
The white gown was free of embroidery and included a modest train and fashionable mid-length sleeves.
The Duchess opted for a veil adorned with the stitched flowers of the Commonwealth countries, in homage to her new royal role.
But for her wedding reception held at Frogmore House in Windsor, Meghan opted for a halter-neck Stella McCartney gown.
The dress showed off Meghan’s shoulders and arms, and she wore a pair of Aquazzura white heels.
Poignantly, Meghan also donned Princess Diana’s aquamarine ring as her ‘something blue’.
The bride also had a brand new Welsh gold wedding band to show off at her reception later that day.
Princess Charlene of Monaco
Charlene Wittstock wore a Giorgio Armani dress for her religious wedding ceremony with off-the-shoulder sleeves and a long, whimsical train.
But in the evening, the Princess switched to a tiered ruffled dress with a high neckline by the same designer.
Charlene told Vogue at the time: “The wedding dress is pretty heavy so I wanted to change into something light, soft and easy to move in for the evening.”
