Top Gun: Maverick impresses at box office in second weekend for over $291 MILLION… as Tom Cruise scores best domestic performance ever

Top Gun: Maverick is still soaring at the box office with the film bringing in more than $86 million domestically in its second weekend, for a $291 million total.

The film dropped just 32% from its opening weekend making it the lowest drop off ever for a film that opened at $100+ million, according to Deadline. 

Deadline noted that Shrek 2 saw a -33 percent drop off while The Force Awakens came in at -40 percent in weekend two.

The new film’s global total sits at $548.6 million after just two weeks out in theaters. 

However, its earnings are expected to drop off soon with the release of the newest Jurassic World film, which will fill up many IMAX theaters and monopolize other more lucrative premium formats.

Top Gun: Maverick is well on its way to becoming Cruise’s highest grossing film ever globally.

Mission: Impossible — Fallout made $791.6 million at the global box office and currently holds the top spot in the New York native’s career. 

The film has made more than $257 million globally in 64 markets though this does not include South Korea, where the film won’t open until June 23, or Russia and China. 

According to The Numbers, Top Gun: Maverick dwarfed every other film at the domestic box office this weekend.

Silver medal: In second place, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness made just $9,251,000

In second place, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness made just $9,251,000 and in third was The Bob’s Burgers Movie at $4,500,000. 

The animated movie The Bad Guys, Downton Abbey: A New Era and Everything Everywhere All At Once made up the fourth through sixth positions. 

Sonic the Hedgehog 2, The Lost City, Crimes of the Future and Watcher fill out the top 10.  

Third place: The Bob’s Burgers Movie made just $4,500,000 in the past weekend which was still good enough for third place
