Strictly’s Krishnan Guru-Murthy still abroad as unprepared star addresses regret

Krishan Guru-Murthy working in Taiwan before Strictly launch

Krishnan Guru-Murthy said he regrets talking about his heart condition while in Taiwan just one day before the show’s launch.

Strictly Come Dancing 2023 will air on Saturday night but the Channel 4 News broadcaster admitted he is currently abroad but is hoping to get back to the UK before the pre-recorded BBC programme is aired.

Krishnan, 53, admitted he is not prepared for the first live show and is eager to get back into rehearsals with his dance partner.

Taking to Instagram today, he shared: “Thanks for all your messages about Strictly. I’m feeling a bit out of it as you can see I’m in Taiwan this week filming a mini-documentary for Unreported World that will be going out later in the year.

“But I’m coming home this weekend in time to watch the launch show which we recorded about 10 days ago. I’m very excited about that because you will all get to meet my lovely dance partner, who is absolutely brilliant and a huge amount of fun and we’re going to have a great time.

“I’m really looking forward to getting home so that I can start the training in time for the first live show on September 23.”

The news anchor went on to share that he regrets talking about his heart condition as the news headlines have stressed his kids out.

“I’m slightly regretting I have to admit about ever raising my heart condition because now every newspaper article seems to be about how I might drop dead on the dancefloor and that seems to stress out my kids… understandably,” he mused. “Obviously, I’m not going to drop down dead.”

Krishnan went on: “I tear around disasters and warzones. I cycle to Paris for charity. It’s fine. I just mentioned it because I think it’s quite important to say these things when they’re true. It’s important to show that if you have these sorts of conditions you can still do physically demanding things. You can still go to the gym. You can still get fit. And that’s what my doctors say more than anything else. It’s more important to stay fit and exercise.”

He signed off: “I’m really looking forward to this. I hope you are too. I hope you want to see a lot more of it too and therefore keep me in for as long as possible and I will see you very soon.”

The Channel 4 newsreader has hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, which has killed two of his cousins and previously suggested it might prevent his progress on the hit BBC show.

The Strictly journey will officially begin when the launch show airs on Saturday, September 16, seeing the celebrities paired with their professional partners for the first time.

The series first live show will commence on September 23.

Strictly Come Dancing airs Saturday on BBC One at 6.35pm.
