‘I can’t believe Sir Tom Jones is going to be 80!’ Age-defying singer trends on Twitter ahead of milestone birthday as he reveals he fell for late wife Linda when they played marbles as kids
Sir Tom Jones has revealed he fell in love with his late wife Linda when they played marbles as children.
The megastar, who turns 80 on Saturday, also garnered a storm of attention from fans on the eve of his birthday, who couldn’t believe his age.
During a Radio 2 documentary to mark the milestone, the Sex Bomb hitmaker said of his past love: ‘I remember her playing marbles and I thought, ”My God, what great legs she’s got”.

‘And then she stood up and she was as pretty in the face as her legs were.’
Sir Tom met Melinda Trenchard in their home town of Pontypridd in Wales.
He said of their blossoming romance: ‘We started playing kiss-chase. I felt different when I kissed her, and she felt the same way.

‘We started dancing together when we were 15. She would look great. She was the best-looking girl around there and we got together.
‘It was magic.’
Tom married Linda at the age of 17 and the pair stayed together for 59 years until she sadly died of cancer in 2016.
Fans of the Welsh legend took to Twitter in their droves on Friday in disbelief over Sir Tom’s real age ahead of his 80th birthday.

Sir Tom started trending on the social media site. One fan wrote: ‘Panicked when I saw Tom Jones was trending. Happy Birthday Sir.’
Another wrote: ‘Saw Sir Tom Jones trending, was terrified to look. It’s only his 80th birthday. Happy Birthday to a true British legend.’
And another said: ‘Happy Birthday Sir Tom Jones!’

The couple stayed together even after Tom allegedly had affairs with hundreds of women, including notable names such as former Miss World Marjorie Wallace, Mary Wilson from The Supremes and model Katherine Berkery, with whom he has a son called Jonathan.
Sir Tom added: ‘The more I think about it, it was destiny that she happened to be born around the corner’.

Sir Tom’s Musical Years starts tonight on Radio 2 at 9pm, with part two next week.
And a BBC Four TV programme, Tom Jones at 80, also aired on Friday at 9pm.
The BBC calls it: ‘A celebration of the singer’s life and times, looking back over 60 years in showbusiness.
‘This archive-based journey traverses Tom’s career via some of his greatest songs and performances – from Delilah and It’s Not Unusual to The Green, Green Grass of Home and Kiss.
‘Additional context to Sir Tom’s incredible longevity is provided through rarely seen footage and interviews with the man himself.’
