YouTubers Shane Dawson and Ryland Adams have been accused of getting engaged to deflect 'cat sex' controversy.
After the initial celebrations that greeted Shane proposing to Ryland, there was some cynicism as to the timing.
Many had suggested that it was to 'bury' the furore surrounding claims that Shane made in an old podcast.
For the past few days, Shane has been having to answer claims that he made in a 2015 episode of his podcast Shane & Friends, which had resurfaced recently.
In it there wre accusations that he 'molested his cat' during his first sexual experience.
In an impassioned reasoning on Twitter , Shane has gone to great lengths to explain that he 'hadn't had sex with his feline friend' and that he 'hadn't ejaculated on his pet'.
After the podcast reared its head at the weekend, Shane decided to put the accusation to bed for good.
In a series of tweets, he told his followers: "I didn;t f*** my cat. I didn't c** on my cat. I didnt put my d*** anywhere near my cat.
"I've never done anything weird with my cats. I promised myself I wasn't going to make apology videos after last years thing so I'm just trying to be as short and honest with this as possible."
The 30-year-old then went on to say that he's, "apologised many times for all the dumb s*** I've said in videos and podcasts over the years," and that the cat story was, "fake and was based on a dumb awful sketch idea I had years ago that I never made."
Shane went on to describe the idea as, "disgusting and very very dumb," and that he 'hates himself for it.'
After explaining that he has moved away from the shock tactics that dominated his early podcasts, Shane reiterated: "I'm sorry for what I said about my cat, I'm sorry for what I said about anything or anyone that was offensive.
"I'm sorry for being someone who thought being super offensive and shocking all the time was funny."
While his heartfelt apology didn't quite dampen down those pointing fingers at him for his 'sick claims', it was announced that he had proposed to fellow YouTuber Ryland Adams, who had duly accepted.
Out of the blue, Shane announced to his followers that, "He said yes!" before tweeting, "THIS IS THE BEST NIGHT OF MY LIFE AHHHHHHHHH!!!! THANK U GUYS FOR ALL THE LOVE MY HEART IS LITERALLY GONNA EXPLODE."
After an initial period of congratulations, the doubters then swamped social media, as they shared their thoughts on the timing of the announcement.
Among those commenting, one tweeted: "Shane Dawson got engaged to divert attention away from his cat scandal."
Another came to the same conclusion, tweeting: "Shane got engaged in the midst of all this cat stuff going on."
Shane Dawson boasts over 21.2 million followers to his YouTube channel in which he 'investigates conspiracy theories'.
Ryland Adams meanwhile, has 3.9 million subscribers to his channel in which he covers everything from beauty tips to general tomfoolery.
No date has been set for the marriage ceremony as yet, though there might be some distance in time given so that any cat rumours can well and truly dissipate.
