Neville names his top 5 Premier League players – and some big names miss out

Gary Neville surely watches about as much Premier League football as anyone else given his role as one of Sky Sports’ top pundits, so he should know a thing or two about the best players in the division.

The Manchester United legend also won the competition a grand total of eight times under the stewardship of the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson, so he’ll be well placed to name the best performers in a season which already looks to be a fascinating one.

But that won’t stop his latest opinion being controversial.

On Thursday, the former England right-back announced to his four million Twitter followers that he was "bored on a train" , and so invited them to throw whatever questions they wanted his way.

And they did.

Amongst several other queries – many of which we’re probably going to cover elsewhere, to be honest with you – came one from ‘Terence’, aka @Aviet19 , in which he was asked to name the top five players in the Premier League.

And let’s be honest, there’s loads to choose from isn’t there?

You could go for last season’s Golden Boot winner and PFA Player of the Year Mohamed Salah, Manchester City maestro David Silva – who only appears to be getting better with age – and Chelsea’s N’Golo Kante, who added the World Cup to his two Premier League titles in the summer.

But he didn’t pick any of them.

Nope, Neville replied to the tweet with his top five consisting of Chelsea star Eden Hazard, Tottenham hotshot Harry Kane, Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea, Liverpool defensive colossus Virgil van Dijk and Manchester City schemer Kevin De Bruyne.

A worthy top five of course, but one that is sure to create debate up and down the land.

Do you agree with Neville’s selections?
