Lizzo: Don’t let your identity keep you out of greatness

Lizzo‘s next gig might be motivational speaker.

The “Juice” singer took the stage at Bustle’s Rule Breakers Festival in Brooklyn on Saturday, when she urged her audience to get political.

“I just want to say right now because we have so many incredible people here tonight, I just want to encourage my young girls, my young women of color as well, my young queer fam, and gender nonconforming [fans], I want to let y’all know that you are more than qualified to run this country,” the 31-year-old flutist said with conviction. “Do not let them make your identity that keeps you out of greatness, because that is what makes you great.”

Before performing her catalog of hits, including “Truth Hurts,” “Soulmate,” and “Good as Hell”, Lizzo — who recently said she wants to launch her a clothing line — was introduced by Stacey Abrams, who served in the Georgia House of Representatives from 2007 to 2017.

“This country has been run by the same kind of person for a long time, but the face of this country — you are America, this is what it looks like,” Lizzo continued.

The audience took her words to heart.

“I’m at church!” one excited attendee exclaimed during the concert, while another was overheard telling her male companion, “I don’t think you understand what Lizzo has done for women this year.”
