Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle Both Break This (Ridiculous) Royal Rule

Is it even a royal event if we haven’t waxed poetic about Meghan Markle inadvertently breaking a royal rule? In short, no.

Since joining the royal fam in May, Markle has developed the habit of ignoring the strict fashion rules that define the family’s dress code … but she’s not the only one. Apparently Kate Middleton also tends to bend rules at her leisure, only her defiance of choice is more about subtle bling than short skirts.

Royal etiquette wiz Myka Meier broke down the jewelry rules, and Middleton is a big-time violator. Apparently, diamonds are not worn during the day, with the exception of marital or religious jewelry.

“Other jewels are worn pre-6 pm,” Meier said to news.com.au. “Before 6 pm, you’ll see metallics, gemstones, pearls, sapphires. At night, you’ll see the diamonds come out, and that’s in order to not come across as flashy in your appearance.”

It’s a seemingly ridiculous rule, but surprise — Markle is pretty good at following it. She does tend to wear diamonds during royal events (see: the friendship earrings Queen Elizabeth gifted her), but mostly during the evening, not daytime. She does have a favored diamond bracelet, but Harper’s Bazaar Australia reports that it was a gift from her baptism — and religious diamond jewelry is A OK.

Middleton, on the other hand …

She might want to take etiquette cues from her sister-in-law, for once.
