Jose Mourinho hits back at Paul Scholes’ scathing criticism of Man United

Jose Mourinho says he does not care about Paul Scholes’ scathing criticism of him.

Manchester United legend Scholes claimed Mourinho was "embarrassing the club" ahead of the Champions League clash with Valencia on Tuesday night.

Scholes also claimed that he was "surprised" that Mourinho was still in charge of the club following the 3-1 defeat to West Ham at the weekend.

Mourinho has previously responded to comments from Scholes, when he made forthright comments about Paul Pogba in January.

The boss remarked the "the only thing Paul Scholes does is to criticise" and suggested "it’s not Paul’s fault that he made much more money than Paul Scholes".

However, Mourinho refused to engage in a verbal spat with Scholes after United were held to a goalless draw by Valencia in their second Champions League group game on Tuesday night.

"I don’t need to know what he said," Mourinho said. "He said what he wants to say, I’m not interested, honestly, I’m not interested. Freedom of speech, free country, you can say what you want."

Scholes said on BT Sport: "I’m actually slightly surprised he survived after Saturday, the performance was so bad. He’s coming out in press conferences constantly having a go at players, having at go at people above him because he’s not getting what he wants.

"I think his mouth is out of control and I think he’s embarrassing the club."

United are second in Group H with four points, two behind Juventus , who strolled past Young Boys 3-0 at the Allianz Stadium earlier on Tuesday. United next host Juve in three weeks’ time before they travel to Turin on November 7 in what could be group-defining ties for Mourinho.

The 0-0 draw with Valencia is bound to increase the pressure on the beleaguered Mourinho and boos could be heard from sections of the home crowd at full-time, but he applauded the effort from his players.

"I’m pleased with the effort, the commitment, the improvement," Mourinho added. "And I’m not pleased of course with the result which is not a good result but is not a bad result.

"I think there are things that is difficult for me to say and if I say it’s not good for me and even yourself, would be getting another reason to criticise me. I think you have had enough.

"So I prefer just to say when last season we finish second, runners-up in the FA Cup, we won our group in the Champions League, I told was a fantastic season and I knew why I was saying that.

"We had probably a couple of the biggest chances to win [versus Valencia] but I have accepted the result as a fair result. I said in pre-season last season was phenomenal to finish second. And I don’t say more than that.

"The players tried. They raised the level of their efforts. They raised the level of their intensity in spite of the fact we don’t have many with that intensity. We don’t have the technical quality to build from the back.

"We tried to do something we did well which was to stop a fast team on the counter attack. We knew we wouldn’t create 20 chances. Our attacking players aren’t in their best moments of confidence and individual level. We thought with three or four chances we would score and win the game.

"It is a not a bad result. Not a good result, but not bad. We have two matches against Juventus to make points. It is a very difficult group, yes.

"We have Newcastle before the league stops then we have Chelsea and Juventus in three days. It will be good for the team if we can beat Newcastle."
