The Gavin and Stacey star is contracted to remain on his show until 2023 but cast doubt about his future by remarking that his missed his family in Britain ‘very much’.

‘The feeling is James is worth double [the £7million] and bosses are reluctantly starting to accept that. The last thing TV brass want is to lose James to a rival.’

MailOnline have contacted representatives of James for comment.

James was catapulted to worldwide fame after he made his debut as the presenter of The Late, Late Show in 2015, taking over the role from Craig Ferguson.

With the immense popularity of segments like Carpool Karaoke, James has become one of America’s most beloved late night presenters, but he said last month he and his family may choose to return to the UK when his contract ends in 2023.

James told The Sun that while he has ‘a couple of years to go’ until his contract expires he’ll discuss the prospect of ending his tenure with his loved ones as it’s a ‘bigger family decision’.

He explained: ‘It will be about people at home who we miss very, very much, who we are homesick for.

‘I also feel like my wife and I have three young children, and they are three young grandchildren that we’ve taken away from people.

British viewers, however, will know him best from Gavin And Stacey, which he co-wrote and co-starred in with Ruth Jones.

Though he had his commitments to The Late, Late Show, James has returned to work in the UK, including presenting League Of Their Own until 2019 and co-writing and starring in the Gavin And Stacey Christmas Special.
