Trisha Yearwood and Garth Brooks have a helluva love story — the kind worthy of a country song. When the longtime couple tied the knot back in 2005, Yearwood didn’t just become a wife, she became a stepmom to Brooks’ three daughters. The singer-songwriter always wanted to be a mother, telling The Country Daily just a few years before getting married, “I’d love to have children. My mother had two children by the time she was 35. My sister is 38 and she’s got three children.”
Yearwood explained that she previously thought of her career as her baby. As the country superstar admitted, “I’ve never believed I won’t be complete without children. I’ve only cared about my music. But I want a life beyond my music and I don’t have that now.” Yearwood is now a stepmother, which has proven fruitful in many ways for her.
Trisha Yearwood gained three daughters when she got married
When Yearwood first became a part of the Brooks family, the “Friends in Low Places” hit-maker advised her, “Don’t try to be their mom and don’t try to be their best friend, you’ll find your way,” as per People. Yearwood admitted that it took some time for them to find their groove, particularly with Brooks’ daughters’ mother, Sandy Mahl, to contend with, too. Mahl was married to the country star from 1986 to 2001 and they share three kids: Taylor, August, and Allie.
Although Allie admitted to Good Housekeeping that her Dad wasn’t the best cook, mostly making them frozen chicken and boxed mac and cheese following the divorce, once he began seeing Yearwood, everything changed and suddenly there was proper home-cooked food again. When the couple got hitched, Brooks told his kids to take care of Yearwood, too, and Allie responded, “We’ve got your back, bra strap!” according to Today.

In 2017, Yearwood gushed to People about how much she loves being a stepmom. “Now as these girls have grown — they’re adults now on their own — it’s been a part of my life that I would have never would have ever known to dream about and it’s been so rewarding to get to be a part of this family,” she shared, describing herself as a “bonus mom.” Her favorite holiday tradition involves the entire family spending quality time together.
Yearwood told Pop Culture, “The biggest tradition that we’ve done since the girls were little is to decorate the [Christmas] tree together. And even though we are all in different places and the girls are grown, that is still a tradition.” The couple’s wedding anniversary is also a family affair, as the country legend revealed to Entertainment Tonight. Brooks gushed, “All five of us enjoy our anniversary together. We’ll go somewhere to dinner, and it will be five minutes until I realize I’m the weak link of the chain of all the women there, and it’ll just be great.”
