Golden Globes 2023: Will Smith’s comeback movie Emancipation SNUBBED after Oscars slap – signaling he may be out of awards season race
Will Smith’s comeback movie Emancipation has been sensationally snubbed in the 80th annual Golden Globes nominations – nine months after he infamously slapped Chris Rock at the Oscars.
The Hollywood star, 54, has embarked on a ‘apology tour’ in recent weeks as he plugged the movie – but his efforts to start his awards season race proved futile as the historical thriller did not receive a single nod.
Emancipation is a historical thriller directed by Antoine Fuqua, in which the Fresh Prince actor stars as an enslaved man named Peter who escapes from a Louisiana plantation and braves treacherous territory and slave hunters to make it up north to Union territory, where he is able to join the fight against the Confederacy.
The film was inspired by the life of a former slave immortalised in horrifying photos of his back, which was covered in spiderwebbing keloid scars from repeated whippings.

Smith has been attempting to get his £285million career back on track with the film, but recently said he ‘completely understands’ if people are deterred from watching his new film.
He said: ‘I completely understand — if someone is not ready, I would absolutely respect that and allow them their space to not be ready.
The Seven Pounds actor added that he hopes his actions won’t negatively affect the team who have worked on the film, which is his first project since the slap.
He said: ‘My deepest concern is my team – Antoine [Fuqua] has done what I think is the greatest work of his entire career.
As the awards show has been accused of having a lack of diversity, perhaps the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) wanted to steer clear of controversy as Smith, 54, months after Smith’s infamous slap of Chris Rock at The Oscars back in March
‘The people on this team have done some of the best work of their entire careers, and my deepest hope is that my actions don’t penalize my team. At this point, that’s what I’m working for.’
Will’s now infamous Oscars slap occurred during the 94th Academy Awards on Monday, March 27. The annual ceremony was hosted by comedians Amy Schumer, Regina Hall and Wanda Sykes.
Among the A-list presenters was comedian Chris Rock, who hit the stage during the ceremony to present the award for Best Documentary Feature Film.
Before handing out the trophy, Rock made an ill-timed joke about Smith’s wife Jada Pinkett Smith’s shaved head. Jada has openly spoken about suffering from alopecia in the past.
Will, clearly enraged by the jab, stormed the stage and proceeded to slap Rock for making the joke.
Joke: Independence Day star Smith has previously said he was left incensed by a joke Rock made about his wife’s lack of hair, which she shaved off to cover up hair loss she had experienced (pictured March at the Oscars)

Smith’s shocking assault occurred moments before he took home the Best Actor gong for his portrayal of tennis superstars Venus and Serena Williams’s devoted father in the film King Richard.
In a rambling acceptance speech a sobbing Smith admitted that ‘love makes you do crazy things’ – but tellingly failed to apologise to Rock for his assault. He did, however, apologise to the Academy and his fellow nominees.
In response to the incident, the Academy placed a 10 year Oscars ban on Will. In a statement, they declared that the 2022 Academy Awards were ‘overshadowed by the unacceptable and harmful behaviour we saw Mr Smith exhibit on stage.’
It took four months for Smith to issue an apology to Rock, which came in the form of an emotional YouTube video.
‘Chris, I apologise to you. My behaviour was unacceptable and I’m here whenever you’re ready to talk,’ he said directly into the camera. Smith noted that he has since reached out to Rock but the comedian was not ready.
Will has been working hard to rehabilitate his once squeaky clean image by speaking openly about that ‘horrific night’ and admitting his wrongdoings.
Following the shocking slap, Variety originally reported that Apple planned to delay the film until 2023 to let the controversy die down.
However, it was released December 2 in cinemas, followed by a streaming release on Apple TV+ on December 9.
The streaming service may have still given up its plans of having a hit for awards season, as the film may lose out on potential profits due to the short theatrical window.
