While details of his sudden death have not been released, his brother, Chris, told the outlet that Ellison was suffering from severe mental issues at the time.

“He was disoriented and didn’t know where he was at,” he said. “I’m sure he was trying to come home and find his family. We love him so much… My mom and sister and dad and brother did everything they could.”

Ellison’s sibling said that the family believes the former San Diego Chargers player could have suffered from CTE — a degenerative brain condition often found in football players. Due to this, they plan to donate his brain to Boston University to be used for research.

“#FightOnForever, Kevin Ellison. The former USC captain and 3-time Rose Bowl winner died this week. He was 31,” USC tweeted this Saturday.

As Radar has learned, Ellison was arrested not long before his death after he set his bed on fire at a Washington lodge and told authorities “God told him” to do it. His case was eventually dismissed after he agreed to pay $80,000 in restitution.
