FKA twigs speaks out after accusing Shia LaBeouf of abuse and sexual battery

FKA twigs has spoken out after accusing her ex Shia LaBeouf of ‘relentless’ abuse and sexual battery during their relationship.

The Two Weeks singer has filed a lawsuit against LaBeouf, alleging that the Transformers actor abused her ‘physically, emotionally and mentally many times in a relationship that lasted just short of a year’.

After details of the lawsuit emerged, FKA twigs, real name Tahliah Barnett, spoke out on social media, saying she wants people to feel like they are not alone.

The 32-year-old wrote: ‘it may be surprising to you to learn that i was in an emotionally and physically abusive relationship. it was hard for me to process too, during and after i never thought something like this would happen to me. which is why i have decided it’s important for me to talk about it and try to help people understand that when you are under the coercive control of an abuser or in an intimate partner violent relationship leaving doesn’t feel like a safe or achievable option.

‘i hope that by sharing my experience i can truly help others feel like they are not alone and shed some light on how those who are worried somebody they care about may be in an abusive relationship can help because i understand it can be confusing and hard to know what to do.

‘the statistics on domestically abusive and intimate partner violence relationships are shocking and during covid i have been really anxious because i know many victims will have been literally trapped with their abusers with no relief or way to get out.’

The Grammy nominee continued: ‘my second worst nightmare is being forced to share with the world that i am a survivor of domestic violence.

‘my first worst nightmare is not telling anyone and knowing that i could have helped even just one person by sharing my story.’

FKA twigs then shared a number of charities and helplines for those experiencing domestic violence.

The singer filed her lawsuit on Friday with the Los Angeles Superior Court, with the suit alleging that LaBeouf was driving recklessly in a car with his girlfriend shortly after Valentine’s Day in 2019 before removing his seatbelt and threatening to crash unless she professed her love for him.

FKA twigs alleges that LaBeouf threw her against the car at a gas station while screaming in her face.

She also alleges that the Disturbia star knowingly gave her a sexually transmitted disease.

LaBeouf, 34, did not address specific claims in the lawsuit, telling the New York Times: ‘I’m not in any position to tell anyone how my behaviour made them feel.

‘I have no excuses for my alcoholism or aggression, only rationalisations. I have been abusive to myself and everyone around me for years. I have a history of hurting the people closest to me. I’m ashamed of that history and am sorry to those I hurt. There is nothing else I can really say.’

A former girlfriend of LaBeouf’s, Karolyn Pho, also alleges that the actor once headbutted her after drunkenly pinning her to a bed.

LaBeouf said in a separate email to the Times that ‘many of these allegations are not true’, but said that he owed the women ‘the opportunity to air their statements publicly and accept accountability for those things I have done’.

FKA twigs’ attorney Bryan Freedman said in a statement to ‘Shia LaBoeuf has abused Ms. Barnett, Ms.Pho and others. We tried to resolve this matter privately on the condition that Mr. LaBeouf agree to receive meaningful and consistent psychological treatment.

‘Since he was unwilling to agree to get appropriate help, Ms. Barnett filed this suit to prevent others from unknowingly suffering similar abuse by him.’

FKA Twigs, who previously dated Robert Pattinson for two years, met LaBeouf while filming Honey Boy in 2018, and they began dating shortly after the movie wrapped.

The pair had split by June 2019.

LaBeouf was previously married to Nymphomaniac co-star Mia Goth from 2016 until 2018; the pair were rumoured to have reunited earlier this year.
