Dove Cameron’s Ex-Fiancé Ryan McCartan Clarifies His ‘Darkly Misconstrued’ Cheating Allegat

Ryan McCartan is clearing the air!

Not long after accusing his ex-fiancée Dove Cameron of previously cheating on him, the 26-year-old actor is attempting to smooth things over and move on. In case you missed it, the Disney channel alum brought the topic up during an Instagram Q&A session where he alleged Cameron was unfaithful to him.

After the fallout from that surprising claim, including a cryptic tweet from the starlet that seemed to throw shade at her ex and his “toxic ways,” Ryan took to IG on Friday and gave his two cents on the whole ordeal.

The lengthy statement began:

“I have elected to remain silent about my past because I thought it would be the most effective way to leave it where it belongs. I am no longer comfortable watching the events of my life become so darkly misconstrued. I would like to fairly and diplomatically write about this once and finally. I think Dove and I fundamentally agree about our relationship with one another. We were young, and immature. Our relationship was dysfunctional. We were a bad match.

He continued, seemingly justifying his decision to out his ex-girlfriend’s alleged behavior:

“She has made claims about me and about our past that I don’t think are fair or even true, but she is entitled to her opinion. I have made claims about her and our past that I’m sure she doesn’t think are fair or true, but I am entitled to my opinion. We have individual and conflicting perspectives on the dysfunction of our relationship. That is very normal amongst exes.”

McCartan also said there’s no bad blood on his end about how things eventually played out for the couple:

“I wish her nothing but the best. I am grateful for our relationship. I learned what love is by learning what it isn’t. People are allowed to be young and make mistakes. People are allowed to grow up and grow apart.”

In conclusion, he slammed the media (and fans?) for supposedly sensationalizing his statements and making things seem worse than they really are. As our readers know, things have been over between the pair for years. Dove, for her part, has been dating her Descendants 3 co-star Thomas Doherty since 2017 and it sounds like Ryan has no intention of stirring up trouble:

We are not at war with one another. This vortex of repetitive conflict is the result of freely and peacefully sharing our individual perspectives on our past, which is almost always followed by a myriad of social media posts creating a fight where there isn’t one. Some of these outlets make their money on ads, clicks and controversy, and if they don’t have a story, they manufacture one. Any claims of lasting or current conflict between me and my previous partner have been methodically manufactured, and are baseless. This paradigm is one that exists all over the social media landscape. It is my hope that consumers of social media will use this as an example to guard themselves against bias and hyperbole, and to increase their social media fluency in an increasingly untruthful world.”

Well, that’s quite a statement!

It sure is interesting to hear him downplay everything and shift the blame on media outlets when he dug up the past unprompted on his own…

Like we mentioned earlier, this all comes after Dove seemingly responded to her ex’s claims when she shared this message (below) on Twitter:

“When a toxic person can no longer control you, they will try to control how others see you. The misinformation will feel unfair, but stay above it, trusting that other people will eventually see the truth just like you did.”

Now that each side has said their piece, can we leave this failed romance in the past where it belongs? If you’ve got anything else to say about it, Perezcious readers, let us know in the comments below!
