David Beckham details regret over Nelson Mandela meeting

David Beckham tosses pancakes in front of Victoria

David Beckham has had plenty of different hairstyles through the years, from curtains to a mohawk, but his choice of cornrows when meeting Nelson Mandela remains his greatest regret.

The former England player, 48, said: “We were there with family and one of Victoria’s friends who is a hairdresser.

“I asked if she could do something with my hair and she said, ‘Do you want cornrows?’ and I said, ‘Yeah. I don’t know what they are. But yeah’. It was painful having them done but I liked them.”

He then went on to confess that out of all the hairstyles he’s sported over the years, the cornrows are a definite regret going on to say: “I had them put in on the Saturday and on the Monday I flew to South Africa with the England team for a match.

“I got to meet the great Nelson Mandela. And the picture that I’ve got of Nelson Mandela is me holding his hand with cornrows in my hair. That’s my only regret,” he added to The Sun.

Elsewhere in the interview, David went on to say that there was nothing that he regrets during his career, but there is one incident that he still thinks of on a weekly basis because it taught him a valuable lesson.

Talking of his infamous red card for kicking Argentina’s Diego Simeon during the 1998 World Cup, he said: “It is a tough moment in my life. It was a tough moment for my family.

“I’m going to try not to get emotional . . . but I was young, and I made a mistake. I did something stupid and silly, and I honestly suffered for that.

“I couldn’t go to restaurants. I couldn’t go to bars. Friends didn’t want to walk with me because they knew I was getting abused.”

David, who is married to Spice Girl Victoria, 49, recently celebrated their 24th wedding anniversary.

Taking to Instagram to mark the occasion, David shared a sweet snap with his 80.3 million followers of the young-looking couple holding two puppies with the caption: “On this day 4.7.99 [heart emoji] 24 years and counting.

“To the best wife, mummy & drinking partner (most of the time) Happy Anniversary love u so much @victoriabeckham @brooklynpeltzbeckham @romeobeckham @cruzbeckham #HarperSeven.” (sic)

Victoria’s friend Eva Longoria was among commenters, posting: “Happy anniversary to my favorite couple in the world!”

Other fans gushed over the pic with one saying: “Romeo is a mix of mom and dad,” and another commenting: “Imagine you find the old photo of your parents like this.”
