‘Change this f***ing structure!’: Cate Blanchett hits out at the ‘patriarchal pyramid’ and praises ‘women in tampon commercials’ as she scoops Best Actress at Critics’ Choice Awards
Cate Blanchett took aim at the patriarchy as she made an impassioned acceptance speech at the Critics’ Choice Awards on Sunday night.
After winning Best Actress for her portrayal of a disgraced composer in Todd Field’s Tár, hit out at the ‘patriarchal pyramid’ that underpins awards ceremonies as she praised the performances of other female nominees for their achievements.
The Australian actress, 53, beat Michelle Williams, Viola Davis, Danielle Deadwyler, Margot Robbie and Michelle Yeoh in the category at the awards ceremony, which took place at the Fairmont Century Plaza in Los Angeles.
No holding back: Cate Blanchett took aim at the patriarchy as she made an impassioned acceptance speech at the Critics’ Choice Awards on Sunday night
Branding the concept of a Best Actress award ‘arbitrary’, Cate revealed she’d been inspired by all the nominees as well as ‘every single woman in television, film, advertising, tampon commercials…’
She also swore during her speech as she called for a change of the ‘whole f***ing structure’ of awards shows and revealed she didn’t like the fact they were televised.
She began her speech with a joke, quipping: ‘This is actually the second award of the evening; Julia Roberts, earlier, presented me with a bottle of mouthwash. So thank you, Julia. This is a poor second.’
Potty mouth: Cate swore during her speech as she called for a change of the ‘whole f***ing structure’ of awards shows and revealed she didn’t like the fact they were televised
She continued: ‘This best actress, I mean it is extremely arbitrary considering how many extraordinary performances there have been by women not only in this room.
‘I can’t believe I’m up here. This is ridiculous… I would love it if we would just change this whole f***ing structure. It’s like what is this patriarchal pyramid where someone stands up here.
‘Why don’t we just say there was a whole raft of female performances that are in concert and in dialogue with one another?’
Dressed to impress: Cate looked sensational at the awards show in a taupe Max Mara SS23 RTW co-ord that she paired with Louis Vuitton jewellery
She continued: ‘And stop the televised horse race of it all. Because can I tell you, every single woman with a television, film, advertising, tampon commercials — whatever — you’re all out there doing amazing work that is inspiring me continually. So thank you. I share this with you all.’
Cate is enjoying a spectacular start to the awards season after scooping a Golden Globe for her role the Tár last week.
In the film, she portrays troubled high-profile composter Lydia Tár, who is days away from recording the symphony that will elevate her career.
One to watch: Cate is tipped for an Oscar for Tár where she plays troubled composter Lydia Tár who is days away from recording the symphony that will elevate her career
After one of her former students commits suicide, Lydia is accused of having inappropriate relationships with her female protégés and her world begins to unravel.
Cate is tipped to win her second Best Actress Oscar for the role. She won her first Best Supporting Actress Oscar in 2004 for Martin Scorsese’s The Aviator.
TÁR was written and directed by Todd Field, 58 – his first film in 16 years.
