WHAT IS A FACELIFT?

A facelift, or rhytidectomy, is cosmetic surgery that lifts up and pulls back the skin to make it look tighter and smoother.

It is designed to reduce sagging skin around the neck and jowls.

In the UK, costs vary from clinic-to-clinic from a few thousand pounds for a mini facelift to £10,000 for a face and neck operation.

All independent and hospital clinics that carry out the procedure in England must be registered with the Care Quality Commission, which publishes inspection and performance reports.

Facelifts are normally performed under a general anaesthetic, but can sometimes be local.

They often involve making cuts above the hairline at the temples, as well as under the chin.

The operation lasts around three hours, with most patients having to stay in hospital over night.

It takes around two-to-four weeks to recover from a facelift, with patients being unable to work.

Bruising is often visible for two weeks.

It could take up to six-to-nine months to see the effects.

Common side effects include a puffy face, bruising, scars and a raised hairline.

The procedure carries the risk of blood collecting under the skin, nerve injury, hair loss, thick scars and asymetrical features.

As with all operations, it can also cause excessive bleeding, blood clots, infection and allergic reaction to the anaesthetic.

Figures show there were 5,600 facelifts carried out in the UK in 2012. It is unclear how many deaths are recorded from the procedure each year but the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons warns death is possible.

Caroline was in much better spirits on day four though admitted she still looks like, ‘a pumpkin patchwork doll’ but can move her face now.

On day five, the ‘small stitches’ were coming out, as Sergio joked, ‘So my wife looks like Porcelanosa,’ adding in the caption, ‘Her skin looks like a 25 years old.’

Caroline laughed and added, ‘He said my skin is too smooth,’ as Sergio replied, ‘It’s way too smooth, honey. I’m the oldest in the relationship now.’

The clip then cut to Day 10, with Caroline showing even more improvement but admitting she’s ‘very very nervous’ to remove the staples from her face.

She wore a baseball hat with her hair down over her cheekbones but still displayed bruising and other marks on her face.

‘It still looks pretty good. We’ve been through like crazy stuff,’ Sergio began, as Caroline continued, ‘And now I’m back,’ and Sergio added, ‘Now she is starting to look normal.’

The staples were then shown coming out, as she admitted in the car later, ‘it’s a little tight, but everything is out,’ as Sergio said he’s ‘so proud of her’ and they went through’ some crazy stuff.’

They also shared a video with Dr. Kim showing all the stitches are out, with the next video showing Sergio saying, ‘The face is done,’ though Caroline added the face is, ‘a little stiff.’

The final video saw Sergio say, ‘My wife is back to being her,’ as they headed out on a walk.

In a new podcast, Caroline described her experience, saying: ‘I decided to have a face-lift with no information whatsoever. I skipped into that surgery like I was having a mole removed.

‘This is LA – so, unlike other places where you’re sort of taken to hospital and feel like you’re having a medical experience, here you’re taken to a back room of an office just as if you’re having a filler. They put you to sleep and remove your face.

‘I looked like I’d been in a car crash and the car definitely didn’t win.’

Caroline, who has three children, said of the ordeal with the unnamed doctor: ‘He managed to cut off three inches on my neck and then the full width of my ear from my face.

‘The shape of my face is completely wrong for a human: the top half is wider than the bottom half, and my neck is too thick. I have stitches at the front and back of my ear and on my eyelids.’

Explaining why she went under the knife, she said: ‘I wanted to look exactly like me but fresh. I did my upper lip, my eyelids, where they take off the excess skin because I’m 47.

‘I did lower neck, and my neck is so tight right now. I really thought it was a half face-lift and I only had one appointment and paid the money.’

She said of the results: ‘There is no sign of my face in that face – which is petrifying. I wanted to sue my doctor because when you slightly look at your face everything is in the wrong place.

‘Obviously after surgery, things swell differently, on each side, nothing looks even, and my neck doesn’t move so it’s like a tree trunk.’

Very bad: Sergio then shared a video from Day 2, adding, ‘I thought yesterday was bad but today is actually very bad

Day 4: They show Caroline on Day 4, in much better spirits though she admits she still looks like, ‘a pumpkin patchwork doll’ but she can move her face now

Caroline shares three children – Yasmine, 17, and twins Aaron and Zac, 13- with her first husband, the Turkish financier Cem Habib.

Near the end of 2019 she announced that she and Cem were bringing the curtain down on their marriage of 17 years.

She went Instagram official with Sergio in July of 2020 and in January of the following year they married – initially over the objections of Sergio’s father.

‘Dad offered me a good amount of money – anything I wanted – to give Caroline up,’ Sergio revealed in an interview with the Daily Mail.

Caroline added: ‘I don’t think it’s any parent’s dream, is it: their golden boy going out with a woman who’s more the age to date his dad?

‘In fact, we looked like we were a couple having dinner with our son.’

Caroline was famously linked to Prince Andrew in the Noughties but she maintains she and and the royal were nothing more than friends.

Speaking to the Mail On Sunday, she said: ‘The truth is we have known each other for many years – he knows my parents and used to read stories to my brother and sister, but we have only ever been friends.

‘Nothing went on between us so it was awkward when we were wrongly linked in the press.’
