Busy Philipps, Ellen DeGeneres on surviving sexual abuse

After revealing she was raped at age 14, Busy Philipps says it was Dr. Christine Blasey Ford and the Kavanaugh hearings last week that made her want to share her story on social media.

“I was so moved by her bravery,” Philipps, 39, told Ellen DeGeneres on her show Wednesday. “It wasn’t something that I felt like I was ever going to blast out on social media. But when I saw her standing there, speaking her truth after 30 years, I was like, ‘It’s been 25 for me. I can do this. We can all do this.’ I feel like it’s a real moment of reckoning for women, that we have sort of collectively carried this burden for so long. And it’s time to share it.”

She added, “It was hard. And really scary … I have a 10-year-old, so when I look at that baby [referring to a photo of herself at 14], I see my kid … It’s sadly the most unoriginal horror.”

DeGeneres then revealed that “something” happened to her when she was 15, although she didn’t go into detail.

The 60-year-old talk show host said, “When I watched Dr. Ford, anyone that’s had something happen to them, you just get so angry when someone doesn’t believe you, or says, ‘Why did you wait so long?’ It’s because we’re girls and we’re taught not to say anything and go along with it. So you at 14, me at 15, God knows how many people in this audience have had something happen.”

Philipps responded, “I’m so sorry that happened to you. I’m sorry that happened to all of us, and we can do better for our kids and the next generation, and we will.”

Philipps wrote about being raped in her new book, “This Will Only Hurt a Little,” but told DeGeneres even when she was writing it, she gave herself the option not to include it in the book’s final edit. She decided to share her story and five months ago told her sister and her mom what happened to her.

“I said, ‘But Mom, I just want you to know’ — because she felt like she had failed me and didn’t protect me. And I understand that, being a mother, but I was like, ‘Mom, you are really the hero of my book.’ She really is. She was there for me. Without her, I wouldn’t be sitting here with you.”
