Arthur makes history! Show becomes longest-running kids animated series after 25 seasons and ends with a flash-forward of him as a graphic novelist

Arthur aired its final episode, titled All Grown Up, after a 25-season run on PBS, which gave viewers a look at the eight-year-old aardvark’s future.

The finale was set in 2042 and chronicled the lives and careers of Arthur and his fellow animated pals Francine, Buster, Brain, Muffy and Sue Ellen.  

In the 20-year flash forward, it is revealed Arthur became a graphic  novelist, who has just published his first book.

He gave his friends a first look at his debut novel, about getting his first pair of glasses, which was the plot of the first Arthur episode back in 1996.

Apart from sticking to the same pair of glasses,  Arthur grew out a full head of wavy hair, a goatee beard and developed a hipster style.

Instead of his signature yellow sweater, he sat at a booth mingling with his former classmates in a green vest and red graphic t-shirt with a bunny on it.

As the group reunites at Sugar Bowl Cafe, a dessert parlor they would go to as kids, Arthur excitedly holds onto his book and says: ‘You’re the only ones who have seen it, except my publisher!’

As the episode goes on, it is revealed that his younger sister D.W. is a police officer, Binky became a news reporter, Buster is an English professor and Francine works for a sneaker company.

Muffy becomes local politician running for mayor of Elwood City and George bought the The Sugar Bowl.

The finale, which came after more than 250 episodes, will not be the end of the characters, who will continue to exist on a new Arthur podcast, games and digital shorts.

Marc Brown, whose bestselling Arthur Adventure book series was adapted into the hit series, also teased Arthur might even become a motion picture.

Speaking of the response from the last episode on Twitter, the writer called viewers reactions ‘wonderful’ during an interview with The New York Times.

‘I love seeing reactions from these young adults who grew up with Arthur, the fact that these characters are still fresh in their minds,’ he said. 

Brown continued: ‘It’s great that he’s touched so many people so deeply that they want him to continue.’

Social media was flooded with users expressing gratitude to the show’s creator as many adults admitted to shedding tears while tuning into the finale.

‘Did I, a 24 year old woman, watch the Arthur series finale and shed a tear? Yes. Yes I did,’ one tweeted.

Another wrote: ‘Really sad that Arthur is ending after 25 Years. This show changed my life & help served as one of the main inspirations towards my animation career. It’s hard saying goodbye but we’ll never forget the many childhood memories.’

Others laughed that ‘of course’ his mischievous sister would end up as a law enforcement officer.
