I was told to ‘f*** off back to London’ when I bought a house in a UK seaside town – but bitter locals are just too lazy | The Sun

A SINGLE mother was told to "f*** off back to London" when she bought a house in a UK seaside town.

Rebecca Tidy, 35, said Cornish locals mouthed bitter words when she invested in an abandoned cottage in St Mawes.

Rebecca decided to buy the property in the picturesque town as a holiday let for tourists in 2020.

The savvy mum initially planned to use the profits to pay the hefty mortgage of her main home in London.

But what should have been a welcomed town investment became a seaside nightmare.

She said angry locals targeted the Londoner and accused her of spiking house prices.

Rebecca told Fabulous: “I’ve lost count of the number of villagers who call me haughty.

“One awful man shouted at me in one shop after overhearing me asking for oat milk.

“He told me to ‘f**k off back to London’ if I wanted ‘that posh s**t’

“He went on to say I was forcing up local house prices by renovating a place in the village."

The 35-year-old claimed Cornish residents slammed the second-home owner as a "rich outsider" without appreciating her hard work.

However, Rebecca said she is far from that.

After splashing out on the run-down abandoned property, she spent hours renovating the place and turn it into a new rural bolthole.

The money-saver plastered walls, repaired old wooden windows and even ripped out the ancient kitchen and bathroom while raising her toddler.

“Basically, I upgraded the house to an impossibly high standard, even though I have no money to renovate the property I live in with my child," she explained.

She hit back at criticism and said "two-faced" locals keep profiting from seaside property despite their trolling.

She blasted: “Most of these moaners believe they’re too good to get their hands dirty. They criticise me, while overlooking the fact that they could’ve bought the property and fixed it up themselves.

“It’s probably because half of them do nothing but complain."

She also accused residents of asking non-locals for extortionate prices for food and drinks.

The mum added: “Visitors to the county are viewed as a cash cow. Locals milk us for ridiculous amounts of money whether it’s overpriced building work or £19-a-portion fish and chips.

“Despite all the criticism of second home owners, I’ve never heard of anyone refusing to sell their house to an out-of-towner who wants to turn it into a holiday let. And that says it all really.”

Cornwall Council has been approached for a comment.
