Nutritionist shares four best supplements to take ahead of autumn

Dr Amir lists his top 3 supplements to take

While it might feel like summer hasn’t really happened thanks to the gloomy UK weather, the autumn season is now undoubtedly on its way.

According to the meteorological calendar, the first day of autumn always falls on September 1, which is sooner than you might like.

Unfortunately, the season of hot drinks, colourful leaves and crisp air doesn’t come without a rise in colds, flus and other health problems.

Fortunately, nutritionist Riya Lakhani-Kanji has shared the top supplements to take ahead of seasons changing.

“While we prepare for those shorter days and colder months ahead of us, it’s a good time to get supplement savvy,” Lakhani-Kanji said.

1. Vitamin D

Dubbed the sunshine vitamin, vitamin D is produced through exposure to the sun.

But as the weather changes, the ultraviolet light from the sun is no longer strong enough during the shorter, darker days to produce sufficient supply, the expert explained.

Therefore, it’s “really important” to take a 10-microgram vitamin D supplement from October onwards to prevent a deficiency.

The expert said: “Vitamin D is an important part of the immune system, and getting enough vitamin D is essential for a strong and healthy immune system – essential for winter health.

“If you find yourself getting ill or catching infections more often, it may be down to low levels of vitamin D.”

Furthermore, the sunshine nutrient can help fight against inflammation, maintain joint and muscle strength, and may even regulate your mood.

2.Elderberry

Elderberries, also known as Sambucus berries, describe ultra-small dark purple berries that belong to the black elder tree.

Renowned for their potent antioxidant content, elderberry supplements are another product that can “keep your health in check” during the colder months.

Lakhani-Kanji said: “Not only do the antioxidants help keep the immune system strong, but the berries are also thought to have antibacterial and antiviral properties.

“This supports the immune system and may even help shorten the duration of colds and flu.”

3.Vitamin C

The supplement staple for strong immune system, vitamin C is, one of the “major vitamins” you will need this autumn and winter, the nutritionist explained.

Apart from giving your body a helping hand when trying to stave off cold-weather viruses, the vitamin also offers “incredible” antioxidant properties that can help tackle common winter skin problems.

“Vitamin C delivers multiple skin benefits by helping your body repair damaged skin cells, aid healthy skin regeneration, and plumps out fine lines by stimulating the production of collagen in the body,” Lakhani-Kanji said.

4.Garlic

While this is something you’re probably more likely to use in your cooking, the expert recommended taking garlic in the form of a supplement ahead of the autumn months as well.

Packed with sulphur compounds, garlic can offer powerful antioxidant, antiviral and antibacterial properties.

“Garlic has also been found to help stimulate the immune system by increasing the number of white blood cells, thanks to the presence of immune-boosting nutrients selenium, vitamin C and flavonoids,” Lakhani-Kanji added.
