PS5 price warning, as Sony ‘struggle’ to lower hefty new console cost

Sony fans are still waiting with baited breath to find out what the upcoming PlayStation 5 console will cost.

It seems like your patience has to stretch a bit further, because the company still hasn’t been able to decide on the price.

According to a previous PS5 price leak, it suggested the next-generation console would cost £440 in the UK and $499 in the UK.

But if you think that price sounds too steep and were hoping for a price drop, you may be out of luck.

Sony is struggling to lower the price of the console due to increased manufacturing costs because of shortage of components, sources told told Bloomberg.

Sony declined to comment to Bloomberg, but it is believed they are facing stiff competition from smartphone makers to ensure a reliable supply of DRAM and NAND flash memory.

The unit cost for Sony is expected to be around $450, which means the retail rice would have to be at least $470.

Considering Sony’s most expensive machine at the moment is the PS4 Pro, which retails at $399.99, it could be hard to sell the PS5.

Macquarie Capital analyst Damian Thong told Bloomberg: “Consumers will benchmark their expectations based on the PS4 Pro and PS4.

“If Sony prices above that, it would likely be to balance a need to offset higher materials cost, against risk to demand.”

Some PlayStation executives reportedly feel they should sell the PS5 at a loss to match the Xbox Series X price.

Other Sony leaders prefer to profit from each unit sold, which they did with the PS4.

Videogame companies often profit from lucrative game software and online subscription services, which is why they sometimes well hardware at thin margins, or even at a loss.
