When is the Doomsday Clock 2020 update?
The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists will host a conference this week to set the time on the clock.
The conference will take place on Thursday, January 23, in Washington DC, US, at 3pm GMT (10pm EST).
On Thursday, 13 Nobel Laureates and the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists’ Science and Security Board will announce whether the clock needs to be adjusted.
The conference will be broadcast live over the internet and you will be able to stream it here on Express.co.uk on the day.

What is the current time on the Doomsday Clock?
The Doomsday Clock is currently at two minutes to midnight – the closest Earth has been to the apocalypse since the Cold War in 1953.
In 2019, The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists did not adjust the clock after it was pushed forward by 30 seconds in 2018.
Before that, in January 2017, the clock was pushed from three minutes to midnight to two-and-a-half minutes from midnight.
Outlining the decision to not change the time in 2019, The Bulletin’s president Dr Rachel Bronson cited the threat of climate change, nuclear tensions and the right of far-right populism.

The Bulletin will outline the factors contributing to its decision on Wednesday, January 23.

But based on past years, there is a strong possibility the clock will move forward or not be adjusted.
A big factor that will certainly play a role in the decision is the dangers of climate change and inaction from world leaders.
Last year, The Bulletin decried world leaders for failing to adequately deal with “climate threats”.

The Bulletin said: “To halt the worst effects of climate change, the countries of the world must cut net worldwide carbon dioxide emissions to zero by well before the end of the century.
“By such a measure, the world community failed dismally last year.”
With tensions recently escalating in the Middle East, particularly between the US and Iran, it is unlikely the situation will not weigh in on The Bulletin’s decision.
Last year The Bulletin criticised the US’ decision to abandon the Iran nuclear deal and warned against nations such as North Korea moving towards “nuclear modernisation”.
The Bulletin said: “It is unclear whether they will keep the agreement alive, but one thing is certain: The Trump administration has launched an assault on one of the major nuclear nonproliferation successes of recent years and done so in a way that increases the likelihood of conflict with Iran and further heightens tensions with long-term allies.”
Who will be present at the Doomsday Clock 2020 update?
The speakers at Thursday’s event will include some of the world’s most renowned leaders and scientists.
Former President of Ireland Mary Robinson will chair the event alongside former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and the former California Governor Jerry Brown.
Dr Rachel Bronson, CEO of The Bulletin, will be present together with Sivan Kartha of The Bulletin’s Science and Security Board.
The event will also be chaired by Robert Latiff from the University of Notre Dame and Sharon Squassoni from The George Washington University.
