A Swiss woman has died after her mobile phone fell into her bath while it was charging.

The 22-year-old was electrocuted in the accident, which happened on Thursday evening in the cathedral city of Gossau.

Local media reported that the woman, who has not been named due to Swiss privacy laws, was charging her phone while watching a TV show in the bath.

An investigation by the public prosecutor’s office in the city of St Gallen found that the charger that the phone was connected to at the time was defective.

‘It can be confirmed that the defective charging cable was the reason for the electric shock,’ a spokesperson from the public prosecutor’s office said.

Many people have expressed their condolences to the victim’s mother on social media.

Her family have also received psychological support from experts at the public prosecutor’s request.
