WEST POINT, Miss. — A white firefighter is suing the majority black executive board of a Mississippi city for discrimination.
The Clarion Ledger reports 23-year-old Dylan Davis filed a lawsuit in federal court Friday that says he was the only certified firefighter among four applicants, but was not hired by the West Point Board of Selectmen.
According to the lawsuit, the five-member board hired two black applicants and one white applicant. Davis’ lawsuit contends a selectman referenced the need for a “quota system” to balance the number of black and white firefighters.
He’s seeking damages for mental anxiety and lost income, back pay, attorneys’ fees and an order awarding him the position.
City Attorney Orlando Richmond Sr. said he’s seen the lawsuit, and it will be handled in “due course.”
