Colder weather is moving in, with strong winds and rain.

But that could turn to snow on higher ground in north west England and Scotland.

Meteogroup says today there will be showers in the North, which will become increasingly wintry, especially over hills.

Tomorrow will bring rain, much of it heavy. It adds: “Spells of snow could also be seen in mountainous regions in the north west of England and Scotland.”

Met Office forecaster Alex Deakin added: “Today will be particularly cold thanks to some strong northerly winds.

“Over the hills we will see snow showers but, even at lower levels, sleet, hail and snow is possible.”

Bookie Coral makes it odds-on for snow in any major city in the UK and temperatures of 0C this week.

Spokesman John Hill said: “The big freeze is on its way.”
