UK set for 3cm snow as wintry weather hits South of England tomorrow – see if YOU will get any white stuff with our forecast maps

Sleet, hail and up to 3cm snow is forecast across Britain from today- and even the Chilterns, South Downs and North Downs in the South East may see rare flurries tomorrow.

Some weathermen have warned we could see thundersnow today as cold air from Russia turns rain showers wintry over high ground across the UK.

Sleet has already been pictured in Croydon, South London, this morning.

WX Charts has forecast up to an inch of snow could accumulate in Snowdonia, in Wales, tomorrow.

But the white stuff may make a rare early appearance around London in the morning too.

Aidan McGivern from the Met Office said: "We're likely to see sleet and snow over the South Downs, North Downs, the Welsh Mountains, the Pennines, the Grampians and maybe over some of the lumps and bumps of Northern Ireland.

"Even at lower levels, perhaps some sleet and rain from time to time through the night and some icy patches to wake up to on Wednesday morning."

Icy winds from the East with gusts of up to 50mph will make the temperature feel around 3C today and tomorrow.

Brian Gaze, director and forecaster for the Weather Outlook told The Sun Online: "Today showers will be widespread.

"At lower levels they will bring a wintry mix and over high ground many will fall as snow.

"Accumulating snow is most likely over the Scottish Mountains, Pennines and the Welsh Mountains.

"Maximum temperatures will be around 4C to 6C but a strong easterly wind will make it feel more like 0C in much of the country."

Forecasters say the "Beast from the East" will continue to bring ice winds our way, adding to the wintry feel this week.

Brewing thunderstorms combined with snow will bring about the "thundersnow" set to fall this week across hilly areas of the UK.

What is Thundersnow?

When thunderstorms brew in wintry conditions, they can cause huge downpours of snow.

The two factors together make 'thundersnow' which is rare because it can only happen at a few times during the year.

Thundersnow at night time makes lightning appear brighter than usual as the light reflects off the snow.

But the sound of the thunder is muffled, meaning you have to be quite close to a thundersnow storm to hear it.

The rest of Tuesday and Wednesday will be dominated by cold winds and cloudy skies as showers persist across the UK.

The cold easterly wind will push the rain, sleet and snow across the country and make temperatures feel as low as 0C at times.

Persistent rain overnight combined with freezing temperatures will leave icy patches on Wednesday morning – which could cause travel disruptions or injuries.

The east coast of the UK will experience gale force winds tomorrow, continuing to bring blistering cold temperatures and heavy rain across eastern Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales and South West England.

John Hammond, chief meteorologist for Weathertrending told The Sun Online: "As cold air arrives from the continent during Tuesday, there could be some sleet or hail almost anywhere as the showers turn heavy and possibly thundery through the day.

"We will see showers turning 'wintry' over the Downs, perhaps the Chilterns, and other hills of central and eastern Britain as we head into the night."
