Twitter explodes after Biden mistakenly calls Proud Boys the ‘Poor Boys’

Vice President Joe Biden mistakenly referred to the Proud Boys as the “Poor Boys” — igniting instant chatter on Twitter about the far-right group for the second consecutive presidential debate.

“He says about the poor boys, last time we were on stage here, he said, ‘I told them to ‘stand down and stand ready,’ Biden said in Nashville on Thursday night, referring to President Trump’s remarks on the group last month.

The gaffe marked one of the few, if not the only, viral moments to erupt from the mostly cordial debate.

Author Matthew Yglesias poked fun at Biden’s mix-up, tweeting a photo of a shrimp po boy sandwich next to members of the actual Proud Boys.

“Poor boys vs Proud Boys,” Yglesias wrote.

The sandwich was also on the mind of another Twitter user, who wrote: “He made me hungry for “poor boys.”

Another person used Biden’s mistake as a wordplay on the band Queen’s famous song, “Bohemian Rhapsody.”

“He’s just a poor boy, nobody loves him,” she wrote, an apparent reference to the actual lyrics, “But I’m just a poor boy, nobody loves me.”

Another twitter user, Adam Crigler, chimed in, writing, “Starting a new group called the Poor boys, who is in?”

Last month during the first debate, Trump told the Proud Boys to “stand back and stand by” when asked by Fox News moderator to condemn white supremacists.

The group quickly basked in the spotlight, celebrating their prime-time reference online.
