Trump suggests anonymous author was a ‘low-level’ staffer

WASHINGTON – President Trump Thursday suggested the anonymous op-ed author was a “low-level” staffer and said the betrayal was so horrible that Democrats are feeling sorry for him.

“Even liberals that hate me, say, that’s terrible what they did,” Trump said at a rally in Billings, Montana.

The commander-in-chief railed against the fake news media, but then resorted to asking journalists for help hunting down the author who penned the “horrible” New York Times opinion piece.

“I think their reporters should go and investigate who it is. That would actually be a good scoop,” Trump said to cheers from the crowd.

“Nobody knows who the hell he is – or she,” Trump said.

Before the rally, Trump suggested the Times’ decision to publish the anonymous op-ed was a crime.

“Virtually you know it’s treason,” Trump told Fox News’ Pete Hegseth.

In the interview, the president didn’t give any indication he had identified the senior administration official, but suggested it was likely a “low-level” or “deep state” staffer.

At the rally, he reiterated his call for the Gray Lady to expose the author.

“For the sake of our national security, the New York Times should publish his name at once,” Trump said.

Leaders at the Times editorial board have pledged to protect the anonymity of the author. James Dao, op-ed editor for The Times, told the Daily podcast Thursday he doesn’t see any scenario where the Times would give up its source.
