President Trump took to Twitter Friday to urge Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to bring criminal justice reform to a vote.
McConnell has dragged his heels on the bipartisan “First Step Act” legislation, which Trump has pushed since last month.
The act would loosen mandatory-minimum sentences for nonviolent offenders and fund prison education and tech training programs to help inmates prepare for life on the outside.
“Hopefully Mitch McConnell will ask for a VOTE on Criminal Justice Reform,” Trump tweeted.
“It is extremely popular and has strong bipartisan support. It will also help a lot of people, save taxpayer dollars, and keep our communities safe. Go for it Mitch!”
The bill has passed the House, but McConnell (R-Kentucky) has so far refused to bring it to a vote, saying he wants to see more support among Senate Republicans.
